Pregnancy
Massage Therapy
This is a space for you to really, deeply receive.
During pregnancy, you are already giving much for your growing baby: physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically. And your giving will of course increase, after the birth of your baby. Such a beautiful thing this is, this giving. And also, it is important to find space to receive, to bring the giving:receiving ratio further back into balance.
Pregnancy massage is a time for you to let go, deeply relax and replenish. To allow all to fall away for some moments.
To be held and supported to gently drop into a timeless space, present with the sensations of your body. It is a space for you to connect with your baby and yourself on a deeper level, beneath the chatter of the mind, the research, preparation, and the day to day stuff of life.
Tense and aching muscles and joints will be eased, soothed and released. Areas of restriction and stagnant or blocked energy will open up, creating space within the body for blood and lymph to flow freely. The increase of blood circulation delivers more oxygen and vital nutrients to your organs, especially to the placenta, aiding the development of your baby. Increased flow of lymph fluid helps eliminate toxins from the body, reducing swelling.
The hormone oxytocin released during and after massage, is also passed onto your baby. This increases bonding and aids the development of your baby’s brain.
It is safe for you to receive massage during your 2nd and 3rd trimester. In certain circumstances it may be advised to seek advice from your care provider as to whether massage therapy is suitable.
Pregnancy massage is slow, nurturing and deeply relaxing, using medium to light pressure. You will be lying on your side during most of the session, supported by pillows, with a short time on your back. This massage includes face and scalp massage.
Each session includes some time at the beginning for a short consultation, and a space for you to share about anything that may be present for you, if you wish to. After the massage there is space to land gently and slowly, and to share anything you wish to.
I am an experienced and intuitive therapist with a strong attuned presence. You and your baby will be held with great respect, and with appreciation for what it may mean for you to allow someone else into this space, with you and your baby.
The therapy I offer works on a physical, energetic and spiritual level. I prepare the space energetically and use a small amount of sacred wood smoke to cleanse the space. I will ask you beforehand if you have any needs or aversions regarding the scent of the wood. I offer a chant, a short song as I begin the bodywork session. Most people tell me they love this part, and it’s likely the baby will enjoy it too.
Benefits of Massage during Pregnancy
Receiving regular massage during pregnancy can make the mother more aware of her body. This can help with the ability to relax during the 1st stage of labour, often resulting in shorter and easier births, less pain and a lower rate of postnatal complications (e.g fewer premature births).
Regular massage can lead to increased breastfeeding success due to the increased prolactin and mammary development.
Stimulation of the circulation - This will distribute essential nutrients and fluid to all the essential organs, especially the placenta, which will feed and aid the development of the baby
Lymphatic drainage will eliminate toxins from the cells ajd blood and help reduce oedema(swelling), which can be a contributory factor in carpal tunnel and tarsal tunnel syndrome
Sluggish bowel movement is aided, helping avoid constipation and haemorrhoids.
Releases muscular tension of the upper back, shoulders, lower back and hips, easing the discomfort of sciatica, prolapsed discs, and Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) also called Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) often caused by postural change and hormone release.
Releases compression on the nerves caused by muscle tension or oedema.
Helps to avoid varicose veins from developing.
Massaging the intercostals (between the ribs) and pectoral muscles (chest) helps the respiratory system and aids breathing during pregnancy and birth.
Induces sleep relaxation and peaceful sleep (it is reported that women who sleep well during the last month of their pregnancy have shorter labours)
Helps reduce emotional stress, anxiety and promotes a sense of well-being.
Helps to lower or keep high blood pressure balanced.
