“Do Lomi Lomi everyday, wherever those people are there’ll be peace in their land.
Not just peace, active peace.
The active peace you get from the enjoyment of a body that is in wellness”
TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN MASSAGE
LOMI LOMI
Lomi Lomi is much more than a conventional massage. It is a deeply powerful, healing experience, working on all levels of who we are, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, energetic.
Lomi Lomi is an ancient Hawaiian medicine, born of the land, people and spirit of the islands. It was, and is, traditionally practiced by Kahuna lapaʻau, Hawaiian healers - ‘keepers of the wise and hidden secrets’. We are incredibly privileged to have been granted the honour of giving and receiving this healing work over here in the UK. It has been shared with us with the understanding that it is an essential therapy for our times and culture.
Lomi Lomi strokes are dynamic, long and continuous, working on the whole body at once.
The therapist uses forearms and elbows, as well as hands, moving around the table with a dance-like motion.
Two areas of the body are often massaged simultaneously, helping the receiver to let go and experience deep relaxation and a sense of timelessness. The strokes cannot be predicted or grasped by the mind in the way they might with another type of massage. This allows for the receiver's conscious, analytical mind to relax and drop into other states of awareness.
This provides a beautiful space for the receiver to gently surrender into. Letting go, dropping away, deeply relaxed, nourished and cared for.
Lomi softens muscle tension, mobilises joints and creates space within the body and mind.
Sometimes emotions may arise, to be experienced and move through. Energy can get stuck in the tissues of our body. Lomi helps release stagnant or stuck energy, facilitating the natural flow of energy. Emotions and sounds are welcome and natural.
Lomi Lomi helps bring us back into balance. In this modern world, we can often feel pulled in different directions. Navigating all the different aspects of this busy life, our attention dispersed and energetic body fragmented.
Lomi Lomi brings these parts of ourselves back together. A relaxed, spacious, grounded sense of wholeness. Of coming home to ourselves, back into our bodies. It helps us remember who we are, and know we are loved.
Elemental
Lomi Lomi works with the elemental forces of nature: earth, air, fire, water.
Using long flowing strokes over the whole body, a rhythmic ocean wave of varying speeds and intensity. Grace, flow, emotions, cleansing.
Deeper, slower, grounded touch: connecting with earth and body.
A gentle breeze, a strong cleansing gust of wind. Spaciousness, breath, inspiration.
Flickering crackling flames, the warmth of the fireside: transformation, renewal, creativity.
Philosophy
The heart of Lomi Lomi is Aloha, the Hawaiian word which is as rich in depth and meaning as can be. Alo - The presence of / the face of, and Hä - the breath of life. Aloha means unconditional love, peace, compassion, respect, and much more. It is often used as a greeting. Kahuna Harry Uhane Jim describes aloha as ‘the breath of God is in our presence’. Aloha treats everyone with the recognition we are all ohana (family). You will be welcomed into the Lomi Lomi therapy space as family.
Mana means life force. Lomi Lomi restores the flow of life force energy, increasing vitality.
Lomi Lomi works down to the level of the bones. Our bones connect us to our soul’s journey, our inner knowing, and the wisdom and ancestral stories that are held within them.
Elements of bone washing - clearing the skin of the bone of crystallised energy, may also be also incorporated into the bodywork.
Lomi Lomi connects with the wisdom of the ancestors, the Creative Source or ke Akua (God), and our essential human nature. At the beginning of the session a silent pule (prayer) and oli (chant) is offered.
Working with hä (breath) is integrated into the bodywork session. Hawaiian philosophy regards breath to be the breath of life. Breath is life. We share our lives together in aloha. It is to respect and honour all forms of life. To lack respect for life is häÿole - to be without breath.
Lokahi means one consciousness connects us all. Often receivers may experience an increased awareness that we are not separate from each other or nature.
You do not need to consider yourself a spiritual person to receive the benefits of Lomi Lomi bodywork. There is no need to understand or believe in any of these aspects, they are an intrinsic part of the holistic nature of Lomi, which is what makes this work so powerful.
Experience
Everyone’s experience of receiving Lomi Lomi is different. Though the healing nature of Aloha is present in all. It is heart-opening work.
Many describe an increased sense of connection, self love and worthiness. Feeling empowered and a stronger connection with their inner authority. Increased generosity and love for others. An experience of the interconnectedness of all things. Deeper connection with the body and soul. Increased vitality and creative inspiration. Clarity, peacefulness and ease. A renewed sense of the possibilities in life. It is deeply relaxing, energising, restorative, revitalising and nurturing. To name but a few.
Structure of the Session
Before the massage there is time for us to settle into the space together, have a little chat, and develop a sense of trust. You are invited to share a little about what may be going on in your life at the moment, or something you wish to bring into the space. You are invited to set an intention for the bodywork session, if you wish to. This can be as simple as an intention to feel relaxed, or something with a deeper emotional, relational or spiritual element. Anything that feels true for you in the moment. There are no expectations here.
After the session there is space to land slowly and gently. You are welcome to share about your experience if you’d like.
It is important to not have to rush off to a business meeting or such like after the session. Some spaciousness and slowness is needed for integration, and to allow the feelings of peace and connection to be. The bodywork will continue to work its magic after the session and for the following days.
